故事发生于山雨欲来的1911年即辛亥革命之年，福建莆田城内“六合堂”木雕名家廖氏家族，虽凭借业界公认的高超技艺世承皇恩，但却人丁寥落各怀心事。廖氏家族为宣统皇帝定制的龙椅三件套交货之时，却发现龙椅上的龙眼珠被人为破坏成为“有眼无珠”，廖氏家族面临满门抄斩的滔天大祸。廖府长子廖曦挺身而出勇担罪责，凭借匠心与巧妙构思再造龙珠，平息风波。但觊觎“六合堂”多年的奸邪小人刘天秋等人又屡次出手暗算，为救父亲廖曦只能背负罪名远走他乡。在流亡途中他在泉州遇到了红颜知己梅姨。为了重振廖家门楣、让精美的木雕技艺为世人所知，廖曦与梅姨这对相知相惜的伴侣，与官僚、军阀、日本侵略者等各方势力巧妙周旋、斗智斗勇，谱写了一曲可歌可泣的工匠精神之诗。
